What is a Discovery Flight?
A Discovery Flight, often called an introductory flight, is a flight intended to familiarize a student with the airplane, airport, and the flying environment. During Discovery Flights, the instructor allows the student to fly for the majority of the flight while monitoring proper techniques and maintaining a safe flight. Discovery flights are the best way to start your journey as a pilot or to see if it’s right for you.
Key Components of a Discovery Flight
- Preflight Briefing: Before you even take off, you’ll get acquainted with the basics of flight, aircraft controls, and safety procedures.
- Hands-On Experience: During the discovery flight, you’ll have the opportunity to take the controls under the guidance of a certified instructor.
- Post-flight Debriefing: After landing, you’ll discuss the flight, ask any questions, and talk about potential next steps if you’re interested in further training.
What are the benefits of taking a discovery flight?
Broaden Your Horizons
By stepping out of your comfort zone, you’re not just soaring in the skies; you’re expanding your perspective and opening yourself up to new experiences.
Discover a Potential Career or Hobby
Many professional pilots recall their discovery flight as the pivotal moment they decided to pursue aviation as a career. For others, it’s the beginning of a lifelong hobby.
Understand the Basics of Flight
While books and simulators are beneficial, nothing compares to the real experience. You’ll get a practical understanding of how different controls affect the aircraft’s movement.
How should I prepare for my Discovery Flight?
- What to Wear: Dress comfortably. We recommend closed-toe shoes and bring sunglasses.
- What to Bring: Bring a valid ID and a camera to capture the experience if you would like. In addition, some people experience motion sickness during their first flight in a smaller aircraft. You may want to take motion sickness medication prior.
- Weather Considerations: Flights are weather-dependent. We aim for clear skies to ensure a smooth experience. If for some reason the weather becomes inclement, we will reschedule your flight to a mutually agreeable date that works for both parties.
